I have recently hadthe privilege of purchasing several pieces of pottery directly from renownedpotter, Walter Fleming. While some of these may have similarities, each isone-of-a-kind unique pieces from his collection. Walter Fleming was born in1937 and began potting in 1986. He studied under Burton “B. B.” Craig, thewell-known Catawba Valley potter who shared with Walter the traditional CatawbaValley techniques of forms and glazes that is realized in this jug. Walter digshis own clay on his property off the historic Third Creek in Iredell County,North Carolina; a rich, deep red Carolina clay. An interesting fact aboutWalter is that he turns his pots counterclockwise due to being left-handed.This is not true of all south-paw potters.

This is a wonderful Walter P. Fleming Folk Art Pottery Decorated OvidGallon Grape Jug. It has a beautiful olive-brown glaze with beautiful rich bluegrapes applied to the front and a leaf stemming from it. The single handle issturdy and has Walter's famous thumb print at the base. This jug is alsodecorated with the classic dot, straight- and wavy-line decoration around theshoulder which adds a lot of character. I was told by Walter himself that heuses a spoon to create the wavy design, a fork to create the lines and the endof an old wooden spool of thread to create the dots. There is even an old corn cob in the spout! Thisfantastic jug measures approximately 11 ½” tall and is 7” wide at the centerand 4 ¾” wide at the base. It has Walter Fleming's OLD signature stamp on thebottom! I was only able to acquire a one of these grape jugs, so this one is special. Thisjug is of a collection! Any “white” you see in the photos is from thereflection of the flash.
