The Book of Abraham is an amazing work of historical fiction, covering two thousand years and a hundred generations of one Jewish family.
The book opens in 70 A.D. as the legionnairesof the Emperor Titus are laying waste to Jerusalem after long years of siege.
After great hesitation and anguish, the scribeAbraham – Marek Halter's mythical forebear – flees the burning city.
The book closes in 1943, when the printerAbraham Halter – Marek's grandfather – perishes in the flames of the WarsawGhetto.
Between these two events, the descendants ofthat first Abraham travel from Alexandria to Rome, to Carthage andConstantinople, to Toledo, Troyes, and Strasbourg, to Soncino, Amsterdam, andParis, and finally to Poland.
From the fifteenth century onward, the book isbased on the Halter family records, for the Halters were printers and early collaboratorsof Gutenberg, thus leaving behind them extraordinary documentary informationabout their lives.
This is a saga of ordinary men and women –peasants and bankers, workers and merchants, poets and scholars – whose livesare revealed against the background of the great events of the past – the fallof Rome, the rise of Christianity, the spread of Islam, the Crusades, theInquisition, plagues, pogroms, wars, and revolutions.
As history and as fiction, The Book ofAbraham is an epic both in its scope and its execution.
